Farm to Car: The Next Frontier in Sustainability

Debbie Mielewski, Senior Technical Leader of Materials Sustainability at Ford, and her team of nerd rockstars is launching the Farm to Car movement, making materials from plant by-products, including soybeans, tomatoes, coconuts and more.

Henry Ford himself once said, “I forsee when industry shall draw its raw material from the fields,” and initiated the first Ford sustainability efforts. Today, thanks in large part to Debbie’s team, every Ford vehicle in North America features seats formulated with soybean-based foam.

Future Ford Trucks: 2017 Super Duty

The all-new 2017 Super Duty was introduced at the 2015 Texas State Fair.  It’s the toughest, smartest, most capable Ford Super Duty ever.  Why? Because the weight savings from the high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy body have been reinvested in the places that matter most.  The frame is fully-boxed, with through-welded cross members.  And engineered for extremes, with 6 times more high-strength steel and up to 24 times stiffer.  Bigger, stronger, and more capable axles.  Upgraded suspension and steering for better ride and handling.  Upgraded powertrains with more torque than ever.  Bigger brakes for better stopping.  And the hitches are bigger and stronger to handle larger loads.
The first Super Duty with a fully boxed, high strength steel frame. Fully boxed means better torsional and lateral stiffness. Fact: This frame uses over 95% high strength steel and is up to 24 times stiffer than its predecessor. Fact 2: There are up to 10 crossmembers and through-welded construction. What’s in it for you? The best towing power. The best payload. And the best ride and handling of any Super Duty. Ever.

Rosie the Riveters

Original Rosie the Riveters Take a Victory Lap in a Vintage WWII Bomber

During World War II, as men marched off to war, thousands of their wives, mothers, girlfriends
and daughters went to work at Ford Motor Company’s Willow Run plant and elsewhere, assembling bombers and earning the nickname Rosie the Riveter. This week, in celebration of Veterans Day, six original "Rosie the Riveter" workers were passengers aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress.

These "Rosie's", ranging in age from 90-96, gathered at a hangar near the former Willow Run Plant assembly line for photos and a meeting with U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell. After that, they spent half an hour flying over Ann Arbor and nearby farms. Ford Group Vice President Ziad Ojakli, whose group includes Ford Motor Company Fund, and Group Vice President and General Counsel David Leitch, executive champion of the Ford Veterans Network, accompanied the "Rosie's" and had the pleasure of going along for the ride.

The Willow Run plant was built by Ford Motor Company and featured a mile long assembly line that cranked out one B-24 every hour. At peak production during World War II, the Willow Run Plant employed 42,000 workers with as many as one third of them pioneering women industrial workers, collectively nicknamed "Rosie the Riveter."

Is your car ready for Winter?

1.  Check your battery.  Getting stranded in the cold with a dead battery is no one's idea of a good time.  If you have a maintenance-free battery, there should be a window on the top of the battery that tells you the state of it's charge.  If it's not, check the fluid levels, and top off with distilled water as necessary.  if you're not sure how to check your battery, most any auto parts store will be able to check it for you.
2.  Check your tires.  While a dead battery can leave you stranded, balding tires on snowy and icy roads can lead to a much more dangerous situation.  If you live in an area that gets a significant amount of snow, you may want to consider snow tires.
3.  Check your wiper blades.  Going cheap on your wiper blades or ignoring them can lead to very unpleasant driving in the winter.  Bad wipers can't do an adequate job of keeping the snow and ice off of your windshield, no matter how high you have the defrosters blasting.
4.  Check your fluids.  Check your owner's manual, but for most vehicles, the cooling system should be flushed every two years.  If your vehicle is overdue, prior to winter setting in is as good of a time as any to have it taken care of.  Also, refer to your owner's manual to find what type and what mixture of anti-freeze you should be using.  You will also want to keep your windshield washer fluid full, using a fluid that is designed for not freezing in the cold weather.  If you get stuck behind a truck throwing dirty snow at your windshield, you will be glad you did.  As always, change your oil regularly.
5.  Keep your vehicle supplied.  Normal emergency materials are key for the winter.  If you do get stranded on the road, you want other driver's to be able to see you.  Roadside flares are not excessive to keep on hand.  Keeping extra warm cloths, gloves, and a blanket or two are always good ideas as well.  Be sure to have lock de-icer on hand- and keep in mind that it doesn't always help to have it in the car.  Some in your house, and some at work are a great idea.
6.  Care for the interior of your car.  In and out of the snow, ice, and salt can be particularly rough on your carpets.  Be sure to have at least an inexpensive set of floor mats for your car.  Better yet are the kind that can hold the water and keep it away from your carpets completely.
7.  Let your car warm up (and revving your engine doesn't really help).  Keep in mind, though, thieves are excellent at watching for cars that are running but unattended.  Have an extra door key that you keep on you and lock the doors while it is warming up, even if you are at home.
8.  Be safe.  Allow extra time to get where you are going, leave plenty of space between you and the driver in front, and use good common sense.  It's better to arrive a few minutes late than not at all.

Ford Motor Company's 2015 F-150 Is Practically Running Out of Trophy Space

Ford is no stranger to winning things, especially when it comes to awards for its vehicles. Ford's popular mid-size sedan, the Fusion, has taken home U.S. News & World Report's "Best Mid-Size Car" multiple years and Kelley Blue Book's "Best Redesigned Vehicle" in 2013, among many other victories. Even Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine was named the International Engine of the Year for an unprecedented third consecutive year -- not bad, considering Ford has historically been known for producing gas guzzling SUVs and trucks.

It should come as no surprise that Ford's best-selling vehicle is cleaning up in the awards department, and that's great news for investors and truck enthusiasts alike. This is list is unparalleled to other brands.

    The new Ford Focus RS

Those of you pouring out Red Bull for the soon-to-be-departed Evo might consider the all-wheel-drive Focus RS, which has never been sold before in the United States but enjoys an international reputation as a wild ride. A turbo four-cylinder sends 315 hp exclusively through a six-speed manual. Functional aerodynamic aids, lightweight wheels, and a tail-out Drift Mode for its torque-vectoring system ensure that this will be one of the hottest hatches to ever hit our shores.

    The 2016 Ford Explorer

The Explorer has classed up its act considerably since the days of Eddie Bauer editions. The snappy appearance seems inspired by the Range Rover, and the $53,595 Explorer Platinum gets a luxurious interior treatment to go along with its 365-hp, twin-turbo V-6 and all-wheel drive. Even so, utility remains the prime directive here. The power-operated tailgate can now be triggered remotely, and the third-row seats fold down at the push of a button. A turbo-four engine returns, but it grows to 2.3 liters and 280 hp, enough for Ford to offer a trailer-towing package. The suite of active safety features expands with front and rear cameras that have an automated washing function to keep things clear.

Ford Mustang is the world's best-selling sports car

Customers around the world have made Ford Mustang the best-selling sports car on the globe during the first half of the year, according to global IHS Automotive registration data. During the first six months of 2015, customers globally registered 76,124 vehicles – a 56 percent increase versus the same period last year. Production of the right-hand-drive Mustang model is officially underway at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Mich., continuing the car's first-ever global launch.

This is the first year Mustang is available to customers in more than 100 markets around the world, including those where motorists drive on the left side of the road. The addition of a right-hand-drive Mustang to Ford's global vehicle lineup allows export to more than 25 of those markets around the globe, including the UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, as well as Cyprus, Malta and a smattering of Caribbean islands. Sales in the U.S. and Asia began last winter, and Mustangs made their way to European markets this summer.

In the U.S., Mustang sales were up 70 percent in August, overtaking the Chevy Camaro for best-selling sports car in the U.S., based on Ford reported sales data. While Mustang is a new entry into the China market, it is already one of the nation's top-selling sports cars, with hottest sales in Beijing, Guangdong and Shanghai. Almost 2,000 Ford Mustang orders have been taken in the UK since January. Another right-hand-drive market eagerly awaiting units is Australia, where nearly 3,000 orders already have been received.

The most popular colors? Initial sales show that in Europe, Magnetic Grey and Race Red are the most popular exterior paint color choices. Race Red is also the top choice for customers in China, followed by Black. Meanwhile, Black takes the top spot in both the U.S. and the Middle East.

    2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R

Are you ready? The 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R is coming!

Fully two years after the first inklings of the 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and its ultra-focused R variant began to trickle across the autosphere, Ford has finally seen fit to let outsiders experience what is poised to be the most potent naturally aspirated production Mustang ever. Since the two cars’ auto-show debuts (the GT350 dropped in Los Angeles, the GT350R in Detroit), Ford has meted out details carefully, keeping enthusiasts and media on a need-to-know basis—as in, “we need to know, and Ford keeps stringing us along.” That ends now.
